Philippians 3:13-14

Don’t look back!?

I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on towards what is ahead; I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

We are instructed in Genesis 19:15, 17, 24-26, to not look back. Looking back can have serious consequences often disaster. Lot was instructed not to look back towards Sodom and Gomorrah. His wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.

In Joshua 8:20 the men of Ai looked back and disaster fell on them. Even Jesus in Luke 9:62, states that the one who looks back is not fit for service.

Looking back is not the real issue, as looking back can be enlightening. Looking back can help us to realize just how far we have come. It can actually help you to see how God has walked with you; how God has kept you! How God has never left you nor forsaken you. It is important to look back and take inventory. This is a critical ingredient to our personal and spiritual growth. What we must not do, is look back with regrets, shame or denial. We must not allow our past to be a hindrance to our future. So we have to embrace all of our past, our present and future, to mature and not make the same mistakes again. We must look to God the author and finisher of our faith. God is a wonderful God that forgives and frees us from our past hurts, shame, denial and regrets.

Prayer

God we pray that You would grant us the wisdom to look back and grow, even as Jesus grew in wisdom and stature. Help us to press onward in love and hope and experience Your peace and joy.

Thought for the day

Your past is your testimony and can be the light and encouragement for someone else.
