Rev. Barbara A. Heard

John 16:5 (NRSV)

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me, and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.”

Making Space for God

We tend to be busy people, always rushing frantically about, moving from point A to point B. Busy, busy, busy. We have so much to do, so many places to go, and so many people to see. Oftentimes in our busyness, God becomes less and less of a priority. In fact, in this modern-day society in which we live, the cell phone, the computer, the Internet, Facebook, and My Space have all taken precedence over God. God has become an afterthought, once we get all the seemingly important things done. God no longer occupies a high position on our agendas. We forget that nothing or no one is to come before God.

But God has this way of interrupting our agendas, of slowing us down to remind us once again of who God is and that without God we can do nothing. We are frail, finite, feeble, and flawed human creatures, not even branches but merely some little twigs needing to stay attached to the Vine. Yet God knows how to get our attention. We may suddenly find ourselves without a job, that job that was so all-consuming that it left us too tired to communicate with God. God can take even our seasons of sickness to draw us closer to Him. God can use whatever situations in which we find ourselves, whether it’s sickness, job loss, a broken relationship, and the disappointments or failures in our lives, to bring us back into a closer relationship with Him.

Just as the Psalmist says, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God,” (Psalm 42:2), likewise the God of all Creation, the Lord of Earth, Sea, and Sky desires to be in an up-close and personal relationship with you and me.

Prayer

Kind, loving, and gracious God, forgive us when we get so busy that we ignore you. Help us to refocus our attention on you and to take joy in being in your presence. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day

Apart from God you can do nothing. Apart from God you are nothing.
